Do you have a dog? Maybe more than “a” dog? No judgement – my life has been dog-filled for as long as I can remember. The family dog was a mixed breed cutie, my dream dog was a Siberian Husky, and I got my first one when I was 20. I haven’t been without a Siberian since, and most of the time I’ve had more than one. My current Siberian is Kacey, and her canine housemate is Archie the Standard Poodle. I can’t imagine life without a dog – if that sounds like you, too, then we’re already friends, whether we’ve met or not.
Dogs are a wonderful example of being in the moment. They are keen observers of “right now” though their main way of examining the world is with their nose, not their eyes. They’re also keen observers of us – think about the things you do often in your day. Chances are your dog knows what’s about to happen based on your routine. For instance, when I’m putting on...
Do you do the same exercise routine over and over and over?
Mom got me a treadmill…boooooooring! There aren’t any squirrels to chase…that would make it fun!
Anyway, if you do the same workout every time your body will get used to it and it won’t be as effective. The good news is that you can probably do it without thinking about it – the bad news is, your muscles probably want you to switch things up.
Think about other workouts you could do and plan to do a new one this week. Do the new workout only one day – do your normal one the rest of the time. Then maybe think of another different workout you could do and add that workout one day next week.
That’ll give your body three different workouts and that’s enough to make any body happy!

Exercise…who has time for that? I have naps to take and you probably have a lot of work to do. But exercise is necessary to keep our bodies and minds healthy, so here’s an idea to get a great workout in only ten minutes – high intensity interval training.
Pick a 10-minute part of your day when you can hit it hard, and pick 4 exercises. Mom likes jumping jacks, tricep dips, high knees and push ups, but you could do burpees or mountain climbers or jump rope or whatever no-equipment movements you like. Organize them from the hardest for you to the easiest and get started – do the first exercise for 20 seconds as fast as you can, then do it slowly for 1 minute and move to the next exercise. Repeat the 20 seconds hard, 1 minute easy pattern through all four exercises and then go through the set again. It’ll take you about 10 minutes to go through the exercises twice and then you’re done.
Self-care for the win!

Do you feel a little sad today? It happens to the best of us – me, too sometimes, and when I’m sad I just whine a little bit. And then I remember that it’s more fun to run than to whine and I take off, bunny-butting through the house up the stairs over the back of the couch and Mom opens the back door and let’s me runrunrun in the yard. Pretty soon I’m panting and happy and back inside ready for a nap. If you feel sad, you could runrunrun, too – or maybe dancedancedance or do yoga for a few minutes or take a walk outside. Even just a little bit of exercise helps you go from sad to feeling pretty darn good. And feeling pretty darn good is better than feeling sad any day of the week.
