Dealing With Difficult Co-Workers

Does it feel like someone you work with doesn’t like you very much? Sometimes it feels like the dog next door doesn’t like me much, too, and that doesn’t feel good. Maybe try this – pretend that the person is a little shy and just doesn’t know how to behave around someone like you. When you think better thoughts about them they’ll respond by being better behaved around you. You’re the only person who can change the dynamic because no one else can think inside your head. Think better and watch other people do better because of it.

Walk Your Troubles Away

Are you feeling stressed? Why don’t you go outside and go for a walk. That always works for me. Of course, Mom has to take me but she doesn’t have to take you! So take a break for ten or 15 minutes and go outside and get some fresh air and sunshine.

Behold! The Power of a Cellphone!

I wish I had a cell phone – mom says I can’t work one. She should know how smart I am by now…sheesh!! Anyway, you have a cell phone and here’s a good thing to do with it – every morning send one text to a friend you haven’t talked to or seen in a while. Just one. Every morning. You’ll put a smile on their face, and at some point in the day you’ll probably get a sweet note back from them when you least expect it and maybe when you most need a nice surprise. Nurture your friendships – it’s as simple as a text a day – and your friends will nurture you.

Stop! In the Name of Love!

Are negative thoughts racing around inside your head right now? It’s OK – it happens to me sometimes, when mom won’t get my favorite stuffed squeaky ball out from under the couch. If you’ve got some negative thoughts that make you feel bad use that stop sign – just like the ones on your roads, only make it appear inside your head in front of those negative thoughts. When a negative thought is making you feel bad, put up your mental stop sign and think about something else, or sing the song of your people.

The Power of a Smile

Is life raining on your parade today? Some famous human poet named Henry Waddup Somefellow – or something like that – said into every life a little rain must fall. He’s probably right and it’s no fun when it happens. When it’s real rain you can use an umbrella. When it feels like a storm cloud is following you around through your day you could either chew on a kong toy like I do, or try what mom does – focus on making someone near you smile. Your brain is magical – when you make someone else smile it raises your endorphins and makes you feel better too!

Feeling Funky - and Not in a Good Way?

Are you in a bit of a funk today? It happens…sometimes I wake up on the wrong side of the crate, too. If that’s going on for you today, crank up the tunes. Put on your favorite party music and play it as loud as you can. And maybe that means headphones on and loud but not too loud, or maybe that means everyone in the hospital better like your tunes because they’re about to hear them. Music can lift you up like nothing else can. Want to feel even better? Dance!!

Why Do I Feel Like an Imposter?

Imposter syndrome is where someone feels like they’re in over their head. Is that you sometimes? Do you feel like you’re not good enough, or you’ll be found out and kicked out? Remember these important things about you – you have jumped through all the hoops necessary to get to where you are. You studied hard, passed tests and practicums and internships and boards and you earned your place exactly where you are. You are not an imposter, you’re impressive!!

Debunking Meditation

Do you meditate? I saw you roll your eyes – just give me 42 seconds to explain how easy it is. Early in the day sit comfortably in a quiet place, set a timer for 15 minutes, close your eyes and breath deeply. Feel your breath go in and then feel your breath go out. If your brain starts trying to talk to you, sweetly shush it and feel your breath some more. Give yourself 15 minutes each morning to just be still in your brain. Your body, your mind, your spirit, your family, your clients and your patients will all experience the benefit.

Are Your Co-workers Grumpy?

Are you dealing with a grumpy co-worker today? It’s no fun…Mom’s grumpy sometimes too. This works for me…maybe you too? I just remember that she’s doing the best she can do in the moment. Sometimes that’s not very good, and she always snaps out of it sooner or later. Can you ignore your grumpy gus’s bad attitude until it passes? If they’re grumpy all the time, fire them…otherwise, focus on how good they are when they’re good and ignore them when they’re not.

Did You Have to Give Someone Bad News Today?

Has today been one of those days when you had to give someone bad news? You do that a lot in your job, don’t you? I’m sorry…maybe this will help. Humans feel at their very worst when they don’t know what’s happening – uncertainty is so uncertain! When you tell them what’s going on with their pet – even when it’s not so good – that feels better to them than not knowing. So see…delivering bad news isn’t so bad after all.
