Why You Should Love Your Ego - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites

Why do we vilify the concept of ego? We work to become self-aware, and yet many people use the word “ego” like it’s a bad thing. We work to become self-confident and then cringe when others call us egotistical because they can’t deal with our confidence.

The dictionary describes ego as “a person’s sense of self-esteem or self-importance.” In psychoanalysis, ego is the part of the mind that is responsible for reality testing and the sense of personal identity. In metaphysics, ego is simply a conscious, thinking being.

Here are some questions for you:

  • Is it good to have a sense of self-esteem?
  • Is it good for you to know who you are?
  • Is it good for you to be a conscious, thinking being?

I hope you answered “yes” to all three of those, and if so, let’s stop vilifying ego. Your ego is who you are, your self-esteem, your self-confidence, and what your thoughts, wishes and dreams bring to the world. Those who don’t know who they are have no way to be a force in the world.

Go ahead – revel in yourself and your ego!
