The Sun, the Moon, the Seasons, and You

During the winter months, those of us who live in the northern hemisphere experienced shrinkage. No, not THAT kind of shrinkage. I’m talking about brain shrinkage. Your cerebellum got smaller through the winter months, and as the longer days take over, the part of your brain that controls fine motor movement is getting bigger again. Meanwhile, subcortical structures in your brain that control motivation, processing of emotions, and decision-making got larger during the winter and are now shrinking in size as the weather gets warmer.

What the heck is going on inside our skulls? Don’t be scared – it’s just your brain reacting to the seasons of the year. It’s been going on inside you since you were born – you just never noticed it because the change happens slowly over a long interval.

Creating or Inspiring Change on Your Team

Is there someone on your team you wish was different?

I wish Mom would just leave my food bowl down all day long but no matter how many hints I drop it only comes down twice. Guess I can’t change her and guess what? You probably can’t change the person you wish was different, either.

Think about how tough it is to make changes to yourself – how are this year’s New Year’s resolutions doing? If you can’t make yourself behave differently, imagine how tough it’ll be to make someone else change?

If you’re their leader you can help them grow and maybe you can inspire change in them. That only happens if they want to make the change you want them to make, and it takes a lot of diplomacy and tact to get the words just right.

Change how you think about their unwanted behavior – you have total control over that!

Seriously, change is the one constant in this world – it’s funny that humans hate it so much. Everything changes and change keeps the world from being boring. Can you imagine what life would be like without change…nothing would ever happen. Babies wouldn’t grow up – heck, they wouldn’t even get born, because they sure change a LOT in 9 months!

Change is good. Embrace change. Change is the thing that keeps life interesting. Even when it looks not very good, you can probably find a thing or two to like about it.
