Learning to Love What You Love - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites Podcast
When you were a kid, did you know someone who loved things most people considered gross? There was a little boy who was friends with my brother, and this kid loved worms. He was so little he couldn’t even say the word properly – he called them “rums.”
Whenever we were at the playground, he always ended up digging for worms. And whenever he found a worm, he’d hold it up, admire it, let it curl around his fingers, and then he’d set it free again and start looking for another one.
Remember being that innocent, and the world hadn’t told you yet that what you loved wasn’t worth loving?
That social shaping happens early – so early in our childhood that we often don’t even remember that it happened. What if today you remembered something socially unlovable that you loved as a child, and what if today you convinced yourself that it’s nobody’s business what you love, and what if today you gave yourself permission to love that socially unlovable thing again?
Can you imagine how free you’d feel?
