Can You Really Believe Your Eyes? - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites Podcast
Murder mysteries in books and on screen are often solved when an eyewitness points at a person and cries, “That’s the murderer!!” Yet the number of convictions overturned once DNA evidence became available is staggering, and points to a truth about people, their brains, and what they say they see.
A person’s own life experiences, level of self-confidence, the level of self-confidence of other witnesses, the conversation with authorities before the line-up, and the amount of time that has passed since the event in question all plays in to whether the identification will actually be reliable.
Why does this matter in your day-to-day life?
Especially if you lead a team, remember that what someone perceives is almost always shaped by their own life experiences, level of confidence, the confidence level of those around them, and how much time has passed. Take each person’s words as their perception, not as unbiased reality, because there’s really no such thing as unbiased reality.
