I watched as a woman on stage told a story. The story was of her teenaged daughter, stretching her wings, rebelling against the rules her parents had made for her. In the story, the girl came crying to her mom one morning, confessing she’d done a bad thing: she was pregnant. After a long pause, the woman on stage told us what she told her daughter that morning: “a baby is never a bad thing.”

At a social event after that presentation, I saw the woman who had told the story and thanked her for the lesson she shared, as well as for her vulnerability in telling the story. She confessed that she’d never told the story on stage before, wondered if she should have, and told me she felt foolish for even thinking the audience might care or learn anything from her.

Do you ever have doubts about yourself like that? Next time you hear your brain telling you that same old “nobody will care” story, remember this: you, your words, your stories, your life – are all things that others admire about you. Your unique light inspires others, whether you know it does or not. Shine it!
