Today let’s examine faith. Whether your faith is in a higher power, in the power of love, or in yourself and your ability to persevere, faith is a wonderful human characteristic.

Early research into how and where the brain processes religion and faith seems to show a correlation between faith and depression, and the good news is that it appears that a strong sense of faith is somewhat protective against depression.

If you know someone who is depressed, or if you’re moving in and out of the heavy sadness that characterizes depression, examine your faith. You can help a depressed family member, friend, or co-worker just by talking to them about what they believe in and reminding them to visit their faith daily. You can do the same thing for yourself.

In every person’s life there are days when we just don’t feel as buoyant as we’d like. That’s the time to remind yourself what you believe in. If it’s a religious connection, focus on that connection. If it’s a general compassion for others, focus on volunteering and helping those in need. If your faith is in your ability to persevere, remind yourself that you’ve conquered 100% of the problems you’ve experienced so far in your life.
