Have you ever seen a beautifully manicured green lawn? It looked so perfect, didn’t it? As you stood back and gazed at it, your eyes probably saw the lovely crisp edges where lawn met driveway and sidewalk, the lovely even greenness of the grass, and the perfectly matched length of grass, blade after blade exactly the same height – nothing sticking up and no places where the ground showed through because it was cut too closely there.
Yep, perfect, right? Wrong.
You were looking at it from a distance. You were seeing the big picture, and perfect as it looked, if you had moved in closer, you would have seen places that weren’t quite perfect.
Now, think about your life from a distance. Let the day-to-day details fall away and pretend like you don’t know the annoying parts. When you look at your life like you were looking at that lawn, you can probably see the bigger picture – a safe place to life, food, family and friends – that other people see when they look at you.
When you’re having a rough day, can you step back and look at your life from a distance? Can you let the “this too shall pass” event not make you crazy because you know it’s just a minor annoyance? When you can shift your perspective, you can see the possibilities instead of the problems.
