Being Bullied? Bully for You! - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites
Is there a bully in your midst? Sadly, bullying in the workplace is as common as bullying in elementary, junior, and high school.
- Is it because no one ever taught the bullies how to better manage their own low self-esteem issues? Perhaps.
- Is it because no one they bullied ever fought back? Perhaps.
- Is it because whoever manages the bully in your workplace was bullied as a child themselves and doesn’t know how to manage the current bully any better than they managed their childhood one? Perhaps.
In the workplace, bullying tactics like verbal abuse, intimidation, and exclusion affect not only the targeted person, they also affect the entire team. If you’re a team lead, be sure your company has policies in place to address workplace bullying quickly, and make sure that everyone on the team knows you’re on it.
As a leader, it’s up to you to address the bully quickly and effectively. Be direct and let the bully know that the behavior you’ve seen or heard about is not appropriate and you won’t tolerate it going forward. If they deny doing anything, don’t agree or disagree, simply repeat that you won’t tolerate that kind of behavior on your team.
The ball is in the bully’s court – either they get ship-shape or you need to ship them out for the success and wellbeing of the rest of your team.
