Do You Often Wrestle Alligators? - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites
When I was a kid, I’d often ask Dad what he was doing. “Wrestling alligators” was often his answer.
Of course we didn’t keep a pit of alligators around, just waiting for him to be ready to wrestle – it was his light-hearted way of beginning an explanation. Usually I ended up learning something about soldering or tinkering with a car engine or trouble-shooting a plumbing problem.
When you’re figuratively wrestling alligators at work, especially if you’re a team leader, a light-hearted response to a question is a good way to open up communication, inviting questions. Like wrestling actual alligators, some people have a very hard time asking how to do something. Maybe they feel like they should already know, or maybe they don’t like to admit they don’t know something.
When you can set a light tone at the beginning of a teaching moment, you make it easier for others to take risks in order to achieve success.
