Why to Stop a Complainer - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites

Do you know someone who complains a lot?

Maybe you?

People complain for a lot of reasons – to feel like they’re solving a problem by shining a light on it, to commiserate about a shared condition, and of course, the chronic complainers, who have complained so often for so long that they’ve literally re-wired their brain into a full-service complaint department.

Complaining isn’t in your DNA. It’s not part of the human psyche, it’s learned behavior. That means that if you hear yourself complaining more often than you want, you and you alone can fix it.

When you make a choice to complain, you can make another choice to keep those lips together when your brain is trying to spit negativity out into the world. Whether it’s venting, complaining, or chronic complaining, it’s destructive behavior for any kind of relationship. If you’re the complainer, clam up and choose a more positive way to view what you were just about to vent about. If you live or work with a chronic complainer, gently offer them alternative ways to look at whatever is upsetting them.
