Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites - Taming the Bully Inside You

Are you someone who’s good at standing up for yourself? Many of us aren’t, and it’s a skill worth cultivating. Why? Because when you are treated disrespectfully and you don’t stand up for yourself, your subtle message to yourself is that you deserved what you just got.

Ouch! Could that be true? Yep – standing up for ourselves is natural, and when we don’t do it, it’s usually because we were taught not to as a child.

People-pleasers don’t generally stand up for themselves, those who fear an angry response don’t stand up for themselves, and those who are uncomfortable making choices don’t stand up for themselves. Behaviors learned as children are often not even questioned and can still be changed if you want to change them.

Notice when someone treats you poorly – what do you do? How do you feel? What do you want to do, and how do you want to feel?

Awareness is step one – step two is learning how to be your own advocate. Starting gently and slowly, show yourself that you can tactfully stand up for yourself because you have value, great ideas, and you are worthy of consideration and even admiration.
