The self-care drumbeat is loud – everywhere people tell you that you need a regular self-care practice. What you don’t hear a lot is why it’s important, so here you go.

Straight from the National Institute for Mental Health – self-care helps you manage stress, reduce injuries and have more energy. Those results are good, right?

Here’s more – when you’ve taken care of your own mental wellbeing, you make better decisions, are a better friend, team-mate and partner, and get more enjoyment out of even the mundane things of life. Those results are good, right?

Here’s what self-care can look like – drinking water before you get thirsty, spending 10 minutes outside, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, and maybe even taking a nap. Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is relax, and that’s self-care, too.

There are lots of ways to care for yourself – the “self” in self-care means only you can do it. Now you have the self-care “what” and “why” – the “how” is up to you. Have fun adding small acts of self-care to your life!
