Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites - Treating Yourself Like a Dog
Do you have pets? The other day I saw a meme about talking to dogs and the silly things we say. I started listening to how I talk to my own two dogs and laughed, because the meme was right on target. Then, as I was headed to the kitchen to make something for lunch, I caught my brain telling me that I was too fat and flabby.
Ouch!
I thought about the “talking to dogs” meme and wondered how it would sound if I talked to me like I talk to my dogs.
- “Let’s go play outside for a while” instead of “you should exercise more.”
- “You’ve done good work today – here’s a cookie” instead of “you’re fat.”
- “Lemme see that belly” instead of "what shirt will hide this?”
We spend a lot of words and emotions approving of our pets, and often spend a lot of words and emotions disapproving of ourselves. Try talking to yourself in the same loving, sweet way you talk to your pets. If it makes you laugh out loud, even better.
What it will do is help you create more self-confidence over time, so make it a habit and practice it often, you sweet little cutie-patootie, you!
