Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites - Comparing You to Only You
Do you ever find yourself comparing where you are in your life, your career or your knowledge with someone else?
It’s very human to measure ourselves against others, and it’s also very human to believe they’re better off, smarter or luckier than we are. It’s that negativity bias at work again – our brains are wired to go to the negative conclusion more than to a positive one.
When you find yourself starting down the comparison road, remind yourself that your brain has that negativity bias, and then remember this: you’re never making an apples-to-apples comparison when you judge yourself against someone else. You aren’t living their life, you don’t know the troubles and triumphs they’ve had, you don’t know what comes easily to them and what comes hard – you don’t really know anything about them.
And they haven’t lived your life, either – you’re both on completely separate paths, even if you’ve been best friends since kindergarten and have attended exactly the same schools and classes. You’re two completely different people, with two completely different sets of life experiences.
Celebrate where you are instead of comparing yourself to where someone else is.
