Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites - An Exercise in Stress Relief

Quick…do a body-check. Where are your muscles tight?

In your forehead?
Your jaw?
Your neck
or your hands?

Chances are that at least one of those places in your body was holding some tension instead of being relaxed. Do you ever wonder what that is? That’s stress hormones expressing themselves in your body.

One of the most common places we hold stress is in our shoulders, clenching upper back muscles and shoulder muscles so hard that our shoulders rise significantly. Know why that is? Because the neck is a very vulnerable stalk that connects the brain to the being, so it’s the first place the body tries to protect in a stressful situation.

Make a point of doing a body-check for tight muscles several times a day, and when you find tight shoulders, ask if there’s really anything in your life in that moment that is truly threatening your neck? Of course not, so laugh, relax, and get on with a less stressful day.
