Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites - The Caring Person's Deepest Dilemma
Do you think of yourself as a caring person?
Be honest about this – do you care about the people in your family? On your team? Do you care about your pets? Pollution? Recycling? Politics? The world?
You have to have said “yes” to at least a few of those questions, so you are, in fact, a caring person. My bet is that, at least on a topic or two, you sometimes have to choose between doing what feels like the caring thing – pleasing another person – and what you need to do for yourself.
Admit it – sometimes you do something you’d rather not do or something that interferes with what you really want or need to do for yourself.
That presents a deep dilemma – please yourself or please someone else. The more often you put yourself second in that equation, the more you gut your sense of self-worth. The more often you put yourself second, the more stress you pile on yourself, whether you realize it at the time or not. The more often you put yourself second, the more the people around you will put you and your needs second, too.
Don’t teach people how to abuse you, and please stop abusing yourself. Your needs come first – when you do that, you have much more to give to others.
