Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites - Your Brain as a Lab Experiment

What would happen if you treated your thoughts like an experiment? Not all of them – treat your automatic negative thoughts and feelings like an experiment – question them.

Next time something sets you off, instead of going with the flow of the negativity, try to step back and observe the reaction and question it – “where did it come from, why is it coming up now and is it necessary that I feel this way”?

If you’re stuck in the automatic negativity your answers might be something like, “what that idiot driver just did caused this, and of course I have a right to feel this way!” Truthful, perhaps, and completely unhelpful. Step back a bit further – why are you angry and do you want to be?

You’re angry because you usually get angry at what looks like a dumb decision made by another driver. Do you have to get angry? No, of course not – it’s a habit. Do you want to feel angry? Empirically, no, but your body could be addicted to the adrenaline the anger produces.

From your position of observer, decide how you’d rather feel. Calm is better than angry, right? So next time a driver does something stupid, could you choose to laugh it off and move on with your day? When you can, you win!
