When something happens that used to make you angry or sad, notice it. Notice how you’re feeling about it now that you’ve grown wiser. Then laugh, forgive your past self for not knowing everything there is to know, and give yourself a mental hug for the growth you’ve achieved.
Need an example? Recently I was second in line at a red light. When the light turned green, the person didn’t go. And didn’t go. And didn’t go! My younger self would have been impatient, blowing the horn and blowing her top. That day, that didn’t happen. Instead, I wondered if they were lost in sad thoughts because of something happening in their life.
I felt compassion instead of consternation, and no matter what was causing that driver to be inattentive, I felt a lot better than when I used to get angry. And isn’t feeling better worth the mental gymnastics?
