Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites - Stop Doing That to Yourself!

Did something happen to you that really upset you? Do you find yourself telling that story over and over again, either to others or inside your own head?

When you do that, you are literally reliving the event. Your brain can’t tell the difference between the actual event and your retelling of it, so it floods you with the same stress hormones it did when the event happened. It speeds your respiration and heart rate, causes your muscles to tense and re-creates the awful feelings of “fight or flight” in your body and your mind.

The only difference between the actual event and retelling the event in your head or to others is – you didn’t do anything bad to yourself when it happened, and you are the ONLY person doing something bad to yourself in the retelling. Until you stop telling that story you will never be free of the trauma you’re inflicting on yourself.
