Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites - Self-Esteem Self-Test

How’s your self-esteem?

A quick way to self-assess is to pay attention to what your brain says when something happens. Let’s say your lover broke up with you – is your brain more likely to say, “we had a good time while it lasted” or “what’s wrong with me – I can’t manage to stay in a relationship?”

If it’s the former, yay, you! You’re maintaining a good sense of perspective, along with understanding that some things are not in your control.

If your brain beats up on you with that “what’s wrong with me” kind of thinking, you could use a little self-esteem tune-up. When your brain is telling you that it was your fault, it’s saying something to you that you would NEVER say to your best friend.

Don’t let your brain beat up on you – put up your mental stop sign and think about something else. Every time your brain tries to take you back to the breakup and how it was all your fault, think about something else. Do something that occupies your mind so it can’t beat you up. Sing a song.

Give yourself permission to talk back to the negative self-talk in your head. That’s how you boost your own self-esteem.
